A campus town on the 78
San Marcos runs along SR-78 between Vista and Escondido, and two campuses shape it: Cal State San Marcos on Twin Oaks Valley Road and Palomar College on Mission Road. North City and the apartment blocks around the university are dense, recently built housing where a single street address covers many units.
Both campuses are public property. California delivery rules exclude publicly owned land, so on-campus housing, a campus building or a campus parking lot cannot be the delivery address. A private apartment nearby can, provided the person ordering is old enough and meets the driver.
San Elijo Hills and the climb south
San Elijo Hills sits at the southern end of the city, up San Elijo Road and Twin Oaks Valley Road below Double Peak. It has its own small town center, and much of the housing around it is condos and townhomes arranged in numbered buildings. Santa Fe Hills, north of the freeway, is built along similar lines.
Lake San Marcos and Twin Oaks Valley
Lake San Marcos is an unincorporated pocket surrounded by the city, built around a private lake, with a large retirement population and some gated sections. Twin Oaks Valley, to the north, turns rural quickly: nurseries, groves and long driveways. Neither looks like the rest of San Marcos, and both benefit from a line of directions in the notes.
